Board of Management Meeting 16/06/2025 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for June was 90.4%
  • There are currently 99 pupils on roll
  • The current projection is 99 pupils on roll for 2025-26
  • Report Cards for 2024-25 were made available to parents on Aladdin on 16 June
  • The following policies were discussed and ratified: (i) Bí Cineálta Policy (ii) Mathematics Policy (iii) CCTV Policy
  • The Dept of Education has stated that all schools must adopt the Revised Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post-Primary Schools 2023. The Board officially adopted the new procedures
  • An energy survey, requested by the Dept, was conducted on 7 May by South East Energy
  • Quaid Gallery took the annual photos of Infants and 6th Class on 9 May
  • Rowing Lessons (5th/6th Class) began 12 May
  • Cork City Sports took place on 29 May. There were great results in the individual sprints. In addition, 2nd Place in the Girls Relay and 3rd Place in the Boys Relay. Many thanks to Marion Spillane for training the children
  • The school Sports Day was held on 16 June
  • The Parents’ Association donated the funds raised from the first Re-Turn bin towards sensory equipment for the school’s sensory room
  • The PA held a fundraising bingo for pupils from 1st – 6th Class on Friday 9 May
  • The PA organised the annual ‘Cycle to School’ on Thursday 15 May
  • The Open Day for new Infants took place on Wednesday 11 June
  • Aherla Vintage Club have kindly offered to donate a portion of their Vintage Run proceeds to the PA. A big thank you to the Vintage Club
  • The PA are considering a second hand sale of school uniforms/tracksuits (in early August). They requested that the school send a survey to the parent body to gauge interest. There were 34 respondents, of which 99% were in favour of taking part in some capacity. The results were communicated to the PA
  • CCTV was installed in the school (3-camera system) on 26-27 May to protect the all-weather pitch, as well as front and rear entrances. The system will go ‘live’ after 16 June, with the CCTV policy being approved by the Board
  • A fire drill was held on 15 May. The next fire drill will be due in Term 1 of 2025-26
  • Sacraments: First Communion was held on 24 May

Board of Management Meeting 28/04/2025 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for April was 95.7%
  • There are currently 98 pupils on roll
  • The current projection is 100 pupils on roll for 2025-26
  • Staff received inservice on the new ‘Bí Cinealta’ procedures on 14 March. Staff also received OIDE support in the area of wellbeing on 20 March
  • The Staff are working on the new ‘Bí Cineálta’ policy. A draft version has been sent to the Parents’ Association for review
  • Sciath na Scol resumed (hurling). Games played were: (i) 14 March vs Aghabullogue (ii) 20 March vs Rylane (iii) 1 April vs Cloughduv Many thanks to Andrew O’Callaghan and Brian Phelan for all their help and coaching
  • Gymnastics concluded on 31 March
  • The school has now qualified for the School Meals scheme. eTenders will be set up in the coming weeks for the 2025-26 academic year
  • An energy survey, requested by the Dept, was conducted on 28 April by South East Energy
  • The Parents’ Association provided pancakes to all pupils on Shrove Tuesday. The PA also funded cupcakes for all pupils who received their First Confession on 9 April. Many thanks to the PA for all their work
  • The PA held an Easter fundraiser to guess how many eggs in the jar. Hair by Claire, The Hatch, Centra and Hickeys Bar kindly donated to the cause. Many thanks to these generous businesses. The 3 winners were finalised on the night of the PA meeting and were announced in school on 11 April
  • The PA has contacted the Re-Turn Scheme, requesting for 2 bins for the school. The bins will be left by the school gate for people to drop off cans or bottles if they want to do so. It will be a form of ongoing fundraising
  • The PA has suggested a fundraising bingo for pupils on Friday 9 May
  • The PA is organising the annual ‘Cycle to School’ for Thursday 15 May
  • The remaining 2 interactive whiteboards in the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th Classrooms were upgraded to 75” Helgi touchscreens on 18 February
  • The next drill will be due in Term 3
  • 3rd to 6th Class will visit Cork City Gaol on 23 May

Board of Management Meeting 17/02/2025 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for February was 93.7%
  • There are currently 98 pupils on roll
  • Currently there are 11 pupils enrolled for Junior Infants for 2025-26. There are 9 x 6th Class pupils progressing, so a projection of 100 on roll for 2025-26
  • CPD was provided to the leadership (Principal and DP) on 16 January for the Department of Education’s new Anti-Bullying procedures – Bí Cineálta. Every school must adopt these new procedures during the 2024-25 academic year. Staff will also receive inservice on the above on 14 March. The Department has sanctioned a half-day closure for this purpose. Once all CPD has been received, Cathal will bring a draft policy to the Board for ratification
  • The following policies were reviewed and ratified: (i) Child Safeguarding Statement and Risk Assessment (ii) Review of same
  • Our new SNA, Deirdre McCarthy, began her positon (Infant hours) on 27 January
  • SET allocations were published on 11 February. We will continue to have 45 hours SET for 2025-26. By combining SET hours and principal admin hours, there will be two full-time SET positions again for the coming year
  • Grandparents Day was held on 22 January. The PA provided baking and helped out on the day
  • A new Parents’ Association committee was elected on 5 February: (i) Chairperson: Erika Conlon (ii) Secretary: Pauline Lehane (iii) Treasurer: Aoife McGregor
  • From the €8k raised by the PA, 16 tablets (Lenovo Tab M11) were purchased by the school, in consultation with the PA. In addition, tablet cases, screen protectors, USB charging hubs and two 75” touchscreens were procured with the funds raised by the PA. The Board wishes to express its enormous gratitude to the PA for all their work on this
  • Jerry Casey repaired the roof leak on 3 January
  • Clean Energy Solar installed our 6kw solar panel system on 23 January
  • We received a free tablet trolley from another school – Tiernaboul NS, Killarney – huge thanks to them
  • A fire drill was held on 7 February. The next drill will be due in Term 3
  • A First Communion Enrolment Ceremony for 2nd Class pupils took place on 12 February (ii) First Confession is scheduled for 9 April (iii) First Communion will take place on 24 May

  • Green Flag: A flag-raising ceremony was held on 27 September
  • Staff received inservice training on the new Primary Maths Curriculum on Monday 11 November

  • The annual Scholastic Book Fair took place 9-11 October
  • Sciath na Scol: The remaining games were played. Overall, three losses and a draw. Many thanks to Molly O’Connor, Noelle O’Reilly, Brian Phelan and Andrew O’Callaghan for all their work
  • GAA: Hurling skills concluded with Paddy Corkery on 19 November – many thanks to Paddy
  • GAA: Football skills began with Connor O’Neill (Canovee) on 3 December
  • Irish Dancing concluded 26 November
  • The Pantomime in Cork Opera House took place on 5 December
  • Drama with Martina Ring concluded with the Christmas Show, which took place on 11 December
  • The annual Carols at Cork Airport took place on 13 December
  • Santa will visit the school on Friday 20 December
  • The following School Tours were approved by the Board: (i) Infants – 2nd Class Mardyke 18 June (ii) 3rd/4th Class Ballyhass 13/20 June – TBC (iii) 5th/6th Class Oysterhaven 19 June
  • The PA collected, counted the responses and communicated the results of the voluntary smartphone agreement. In total, 42 pupils from 1st to 6th Class opted in – 55%. The agreement will be circulated again next year, again from 1st to 6th Class
  • The PA held a Table Quiz on 11 October, resulting in a new total of €7,651 being reached
  • The PA raised €211 from pupils’ Christmas Cards and decorations at a sale on 7 December. The original €8k target has now been reached and iPads/tablets will be purchased by the school in the new year, in consultation with the PA
  • The PA raised held a raffle at the Christmas Show and supplied goodie bags for every child. Selection boxes were organised for Santa’s visit on 20 Dec. Huge thanks to the PA for all their fantastic work throughout the year
  • The Dept of Education has sanctioned the full funding of solar panels for the school (up to 6kw, 14 panels). After the tendering process, Clean Energy Solar were awarded the contract. The installation date is January 2025
  • A fire drill was held on 19 September. The next drill will be due in Term 2

  • Our Admission Notice is now ‘live’ on the website and we will accept up to 19 pupils in Junior Infants for 2025-26 (applications for admission open 1 October)
  • Emma O’Riordan has been appointed Principal of Cappabue NS and has resigned her permanent position in Kilbonane NS, effective 2 October. The Board of Management would like to sincerely thank Emma for all her years of service in Aherla and wishes her the very best in her new role
  • Staff will have Inservice training on the new Primary Maths Curriculum on Monday 11 November. The Department of Education has sanctioned a full-day closure for this training

  • Irish Dancing begins Tuesday 1 October (8 weeks) with Deirdre O’Sullivan
  • Drama lessons have resumed with Martina Ring – Fridays until Christmas
  • The Christmas Show has been booked for 11 December
  • Sciath na Scol: Two games have been played to date. Two more games scheduled in the coming weeks
  • The annual Scholastic Book Fair will take place in the hall 9-11 October
  • On 13 September, Aherla & District Vintage Club donated €2,200 to the Parents’ Association towards their iPad fundraiser, bringing the total raised to almost €7k. Huge thank you from the Board to the Vintage Club. The PA hopes that a planned Table Quiz on 11 October will bring in enough to reach the fundraising goal of €8k. iPads/tablets will then be purchased by the school, in consultation with the PA
  • 3rd/4th Class ran a fundraising bake sale on Friday 20 September. The total raised was €140
  • The PA and the school have introduced a Voluntary Smartphone Agreement. Parents have been surveyed and 89% of respondents expressed an interest in signing up. Forms were circulated from 1st Class upwards and the closing date for receipt of responses is Friday 27 September. The PA will collect, count the responses and communicate the numbers to the school
  • The HSE’s Junior Infants Immunisation and Senior Infants Health Screening programmes will commence in October
  • A flag-raising ceremony is planned for Friday 27 September. Members of both energy committees (including past pupils) will be present for the event. The flag will be raised and members of the committees will be awarded goodie bags and certificates. Many thanks to Ciara McCarthy who was (and is) green schools co-ordinator

  • Gymnastics: concluded on 21 March
  • Sciath na Scol: (i) hurling blitz took place between ourselves, Aghabullogue and Rylane NS on 21 March. Result: one loss and one win (ii) Semi-final vs Vicarstown on 23 April. Result: loss Huge thanks to Brian Phelan, Molly O’Connor and Louise Henchin for all their work in training the team
  • Qualifications for Cork City Sports took place on 22 March at Cloughduv GAA pitch
  • Rowing (5th/6th Class): 6-week block began on 15 May and concluded 19 June
  • Cork City Sports took place on 30 May. Three staff members attended and supervised both boys’ and girls’ events. Result was: 1st Place Girls Relay, as well as several 1st, 2nd and 3rd places
  • Sports Day was held on 19 June
  • A Lá Glas fundraiser took place on 15 March in aid of the Parents’ Association
  • The PA held a Table Quiz on 12 April. The result was €1,263. Huge thanks and well done to all involved
  • The PA organised a ‘Cycle to School’ on Thursday 16 May
  • The PA examined and approved the draft versions of the (i) RSE Policy and (ii) The Acceptable Use Policy
  • A fundraiser bake sale (held by 5th/6th Class) took place on Friday 14 June in aid of the PA
  • The PA and the school will work towards introducing a voluntary smartphone agreement in September/October. Work on this is ongoing

  • A second disabled parking space has been installed by Cork County Council (7 May)
  • A new fibreglass flagpole has been ordered from Flagpoles Ireland and is due to be installed next week (24-28 June)
  • World Book Day took place on 7 March
  • First Confession took place on 17 April

  • The school has been successful in its application for a Green Flag (energy). The award ceremony took place on 15 May. Huge thanks to Ciara McCarthy and the Energy Committee (and Mary Shine for all her help and support)
  • The school held an Open Day for Incoming Junior Infants on Wednesday 12 June @ 1.45pm

  • Attendance for March was 95.9%

  • The school held a ‘wellbeing week’ on the week beginning 12 February
  • The following policies were discussed and ratified: (i) Plean Scoile don Ghaeilge (ii) Electronic Banking Policy (iii) Policy on Qualification for Cork City Sports
  • SET allocations for 2024-25 have been published. The school will have 45 hours per week
  • Swimming Lessons concluded on 29 January
  • The annual Army Brass Band concert took place in City Hall on 20 February (3rd to 6th Class)
  • A Ficheall Chess tournament took place in Innishannon on 22 February. 16 pupils from 3rd to 6th Class attended
  • Gymnastics: A 4-week block began on 29 February and will conclude on 21 March
  • A Sciath na Scol hurling blitz (first stage) is planned to take place next week at Cloughduv GAA pitch next week (date TBC)
  • Qualifications for Cork City Sports will be held next week at Cloughduv GAA pitch, weather permitting (date TBC)
  • Rowing (5th/6th Class): A 6-week block will begin on 15 May
  • The Parents Association AGM was held on 23 January. The new Chairperson is Sarah Hassett
  • The PA cooked and provided pancakes for all pupils on Pancake Tuesday – huge thanks to all involved
  • The PA managed to secure a fundraising slot at Bishopstown Dunnes on Saturday 9 March – result: the PA are half-way towards their target of 16 new iPads for the school
  • A Lá Glas/Crazy Hair Day will take place on 15 March. Pupils are encouraged to bring €2. Proceeds of the fundraiser will go to the PA
  • Buildings: (i) The wall caps and exterior wall require cleaning and painting (ii) The four aluminium flagpoles were removed recently due to being noisy, poor quality and very difficult to raise and lower flags in poor weather. The Board approved – in principle (and assuming the funds are available) – of the purchase of one new fibreglass pole
  • Equipment/Resources: Two new 75” touchscreens were installed on 6 February by Sharptext. This included height-adjustable mount and relocation of older interactive whiteboard
  • Extra: A Liquidambar tree was donated to the school by Ronan Nangle and planted on 5 March – huge thanks to Ronan
  • A fire drill was held on 22 January. Another drill will be due in Term 3
  • Cork City Sports will take place on 30 May

Board of Management Meeting 23/01/2024 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for January was 89.1%
  • There are currently 98 pupils on roll
  • There are 13 applications for admission to Junior Infants for 2024-25 at present. Parents will be officially offered places by 1 March but more than likely by mid-February. Current prediction is 97 on roll for 2024-25
  • The following policies were discussed and ratified: (i) Child Safeguarding Statement and Risk Assessment (ii) Review of the Child Safeguarding Statement document
  • All curricular plans will be updated gradually between now and June
  • Extra-curricular: (i) Our Carol Service/Nativity was held in the Church on 12 December 2023 (ii) The Carols at Cork Airport took place on 13 December 2023 (iii) The school attended the Christmas Panto on 14 December 2023
  • Swimming Lessons began on 8 January (4 week block) for pupils from 3rd to 6th Class – finishing 29 January
  • Indoor Camogie/Hurling for 3rd/4th Class took place on 11 and 16 January
  • A Ficheall Chess tournament will take place on 22 February. 16 pupils from 3rd to 6th Class will attend and represent the school
  • Gymnastics: 4 week block beginning 29 February
  • Rowing: A six-week block (pupils from 5th/6th Class) beginning 15 May
  • The Parents Association held a stall at the lighting of the Christmas tree in Aherla (2 December 2023). Parents of Juniors to 2nd Class provided baking. The pupils created clay Christmas tree decorations which were also sold in order to raise funds
  • The PA held their annual raffle at the school on 22 December, raising €480 which will be added to their GoFundMe page towards the purchase of iPads for the school
  • The PA provided selection boxes for every child at Santa’s visit on 22 December. Many thanks to the PA for all their work and support over the past year
  • Parents were surveyed on the Christmas Show – approx. 79% in favour of moving to a two-year alternating system (ie Year 1 full show in Ovens Hall; Year 2 simple carol service in the Church). The Board discussed this and agreed to move to a two-year alternating system from 2024-25
  • Parents were surveyed (Google Forms) on 8 January as part of the Review of the Child Safeguarding Statement Review
  • The Parents Association AGM was held on 23 January
  • Repairs: (i) A chute that was leaking over the front wall of the school has been fixed (ii) The Board discussed painting the wall caps (and possibly front exterior walls of school) this year. The condition of the paintwork will be assessed in the coming weeks and the Board has sanctioned painting work to be completed if suitable
  • The Board discussed the possibility of gradually installing interactive touch-screens in the classrooms to replace promethean boards and projectors. The Board decided to purchase one 75″ touchscreen unit initially and to seek quotations on a second. Cathal will speak with the suppliers
  • The fire extinguishers were tested and passed inspection on 11 January by Apex Fire
  • A fire drill was held on 22 January. Another drill will be due in Term 3

Board of Management Meeting 29/11/2023 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for November was 96.9%
  • There are currently 98 pupils on roll
  • The Teacher Nominee for the board of Management 2023-2027 is Eva O’Driscoll.
  • Staff received Inservice training on the new Primary Maths Curriculum on 27 November. Our school was clustered with other smaller schools for the training and it was delivered at West Cork Education Centre. The Department of Education sanctioned a full-day closure for this training.
  • The school had a Department of Education Inspection (Curriculum Evaluation) in Maths on 10-11 October. The Inspector furnished a full report which will be published on the Department’s website in the coming weeks.
  • The school has purchased a Wellbeing programme and will implement this over a ten-week period every academic year going forward as part of the SPHE curriculum. The programme is called ‘Welcome to Wellbeing’ (Infants to 1st Class) and ‘Weaving Wellbeing’ (2nd to 6th Class).
  • We are still reviewing our ICT Acceptable Use Policy and currently updating our Plean Gaeilge. All curricular plans will be updated gradually throughout the 2023-24 year.
  • In Sciath na Scol, the football team reached the semi-final of our group on 24 October but unfortunately lost. Many thanks to Laura MacMahon and Eva O’Driscoll for coaching.
  • Green Schools: We are currently working on the process for Year 2 of our Energy flag application.
  • The Student Council has been set up for 2023-24. They will meet once a month under the direction of Laura MacMahon.
  • Our annual Scholastic Book Fair ran from 12-13 October and was a great success.
  • Irish Dancing (6 week block) with Deirdre O’Sullivan came to an end on 20 November. Feedback has been very good and we hope to continue with this next year.
  • Our annual Carol Service/Nativity Play will be held in the Church on 12 December. Parents are being surveyed on the possibility of a 2-Year alternating system – one year in the Church, one year in Éire Óg Hall. Cathal will bring the results to the next Board meeting and a decision will be made then.
  • The Carols at Cork Airport will take place on 13 December (3rd to 6th Class).
  • The Christmas Panto will be on 14 December.
  • Swimming Lessons due to begin in January (4 week block) for pupils from 3rd to 6th Class.
  • Gymnastics: 4 week block will begin 29 February 2024.
  • Parent-Teacher meetings (in-person) were held on 20 November. Parents were also offered the choice of phone call meetings.
  • Two Parent Nominees have been elected to the Board of Management for 2023-27. These are Siobhán Slevin and Adrian Cullinane.
  • A fundraising cake sale in aid of the Parents Association was held on 27 October.
  • The Parents Association have offered to fundraise towards the cost of new iPads for the school. They organised a bag packing fundraiser on Saturday 11 November which raised €881 and they have also set up a GoFundMe page which people may wish to support if they choose.   • The PA funded a new parachute for the school from a €170 grant they received for the previous Cycle to School event.
  • The PA will have a stall at the lighting of the Christmas tree in Aherla (2 December) and are asking parents of Juniors to 2nd Class to provide baking. The pupils have created clay Christmas tree decorations which will also be sold in order to raise funds. The school thanks them very much for all their support.
  • Ballincollig’s Eastgate Medical Centre kindly offered free flu vaccine for all children and came to the school to administer on 26 October.
  • First Communion will take place on Saturday 25 May 2024. We will be grouped with Cloughduv NS.
  • Confirmation will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024. Again, we will be grouped with Cloughduv NS.

Board of Management Meeting 27/09/2023 – Agreed Report

  • Attendance for September was 97.5%
  • There are currently 98 pupils on roll
  • The Board approved our Admission Notice for 2024-25. The Board agreed that 21 places will be made available in Junior Infants for 2024-25.
  • Our new cleaner, Margaret Corcoran, began working in the school on 31 August.
  • Staff will have Inservice training on the new Primary Maths Curriculum between October and next June. Our school will be clustered with other smaller schools for the training and it will be delivered off-site. The Department of Education has sanctioned a full-day closure for this training.
  • The following policies were reviewed and ratified: (i) Plean Scoile Policy Statement (ii) Admission Policy (iii) Code of Behaviour (iv) Critical Incident Policy (v) Anti-Bullying Policy (vi) Health & Safety Policy (vii) Admission Notice (viii) Online Banking Policy.

  • Laura MacMahon will lead the Student Council meetings (once per month) – to begin in October.

  • Swimming Lessons are due to begin in January (4 week block) for pupils from 3rd to 6th Class
  • Gymnastics: 4 week block beginning 29 February 2024.
  • Repairs/Improvements: (i) The tap in the Infants classroom was replaced (ii) The sink under the stairs (for use by cleaner) was leaking and new pipework had to be laid.
  • Equipment/Resources: (i) James Gleeson has now networked the 13 laptops in the computer lab. Huge thanks to James for all his work.
  • Health & Safety: Eva O’Driscoll carried out a H&S audit on 14 September.
  • We held a Fire Drill on 14 September and will hold another in Term 2.
